Spotting tells in Online Poker

In live poker a tell can be anything from blink of an eye to a player falling of his chair. In an online poker game the tells are a bit more difficult to detect, but they’re still there. When you’re playing Internet poker the tells are generally related to the speed with which an opponent acts. And a general thumb rule from live poker applies: implied strength normally means weakness, and implied weakness normally means strength.

Signs of weak hands in online poker:
Instant call on a bet: When a player calls your bet right away he will generally have a weak calling hand. This player wants you to think that he has a stronger hand and is hoping that you will not make another bet.
Check-call followed by bet on turn: When a player check-calls on the flop and then opens the betting on the turn, he will generally be in a weak position. This kind of bet usually means that the player has picked up a draw or that he is semi-bluffing with a draw he got on the flop. In these cases you should strongly consider raising no matter what cards you’re holding.
Delayed check: When a player takes longer than usual to check, he generally does not want you to make a bet. This player wants to intimidate you by implying strength and is hoping he will get to see the next card for free.
Instant check (with help of the “in turn” check/fold button): When a player in late position uses the "in turn" button to check he will generally have a weak hand. This type of move is often made by people that are playing at multiple tables. They don’t want to waste any time on lousy cards.

Signs of strong hands in online poker:
Immediate bet or raise on the river: When a player bets or raises right away on the river he will generally have a strong hand. He makes this move to make you think he’s on a bluff, and is hoping that you will call his bet/raise. Sometimes this tactic is used on the turn as well. Delayed bet: When a player takes a long time and then makes a bet, he will normally have strong cards. He’s trying to imply weakness in the hopes that you will call his bet or even raise him. If you do he will probably re-raise. Delayed call: When a player waits for a long time and then calls he might well be slow playing a strong hand. He wants you to think he’s weak and is hoping that you will bet into him again.
